Pool Heaters and Heat Pumps
A pool heater allows you to extend your swimming season. It will ensure that your pool is always set to the temperature you find most comfortable, and will create a warm and inviting swim environment even on chillier days. The days of having to rely on the sun to warm your pool are a thing of the past.
Having a pool heater is much like having someone constantly monitoring your pool’s temperature. If the water temperature changes, the heater will automatically turn on and start working to raise the temperature back to the predetermined level. Once the ideal temperature is reached, the heater automatically turns off.
Gas heaters use natural gas or propane. They work by pulling clean, already-filtered water into a reservoir, heating the water, and then allowing the water to flow back into the pool or spa. After several cycles, the water will begin to feel warm to the touch. Newer model gas heaters are highly efficient and can save hundreds of dollars a year when replacing old, existing gas heaters.
Heat pumps warm your pool and spa utilizing the same technology that is used to heat and cool a home. Heat pumps are considered highly efficient and can give you as much as a 600% return on your energy expenditures—meaning for every dollar you spend to heat your pool or spa, you can get as much as $6.00 worth of heat—which explains the growing popularity of this heating method. This heating method also allows you to heat your pool and spa all day, every day for far less than any of the other methods.
Solar blankets are another means of heating your pool. They work by absorbing the sun’s rays in thousands of air pouches, and then trapping this heat in the pool water. Solar blankets can also work as a nice addition to your pool, even if you have a heater or heat pump, because they keep the water warm longer and don’t allow it to escape into the air. Solar blankets are also great for reducing evaporation rates, making your chemicals last longer.
